| Measure L Taxing Timeshare Owners? |

A special election on April 13 in South Lake Tahoe,
California will decide on an additional property tax of
$60 per year on every parcel number. The controversial
Measure L is designed to cover massive deficits in the
Lake Tahoe Unified School District caused by shrinking
enrollment and less state funding. If two-thirds of the
voters approve Measure L, it will raise $3.2 million
annually for six years. If it fails, two elementary
schools will close, teachers and staff will be fired and
students will pay higher fees. The problem with this tax
is that every parcel pays the same amount regardless
of the assessed value. A lakefront property worth
millions is taxed the same as a one-week timeshare.
Timeshare owners are not local residents with children
in the school system and worse yet, have no vote in
this special election. This is a classic case of "taxation
without representation" for the timeshare owners who
have united to campaign against Measure L. We will
