| Exchange 101: How to Maximize Your Trading Power |

When you purchase a timeshare, you can vacation
around the world! The flexibility of exchange is one of
the best features of timeshare ownership. There are
numerous exchange companies in the United States.
The two largest are Resort Condominiums International
(RCI) and Interval International (II). For a fee, you can
deposit your resort week with the exchange company
and reserve a week at a different first-class resort
anywhere you want. Your deposited week is evaluated
for trade value based on the demand for that week at
your home resort along with the resort location, resort
quality, sleeping capacity and color code: Red, White
or Blue. Both RCI (www.rci.com ) and II
(www.intervalworld.com) recommend that you deposit
your resort week as early as possible, up to one year
before it starts or two years if your resort participates
in the Early Deposit program. An early deposit improves
your chances of a favorable match. You should also
request early, as soon as you decide where you want
to travel. Flexibility on choice of resorts and dates will
help speed up fulfillment of your request. You should
submit at least three different resorts and two different
time periods.
There are "tricks of the trade" to maximize your
exchange value. We asked our Paradise experts to
share their secrets. Nancy Beaulieu emphasizes the
importance of taking control of the exchange. "All
weeks with the same color do not have the same
trading power. Don't just deposit your week at your
home resort. Call and reserve the highest demand week
within your season. This will improve your trade value.
Wait until you have the confirmation before you
contact the exchange company." Nancy also
recommends that you purchase a larger unit if possible
to increase your trading power. Timeshares with more
private sleeping areas are in higher demand.
If you own a timeshare week that is in high demand, Ed
Bradford suggests the Request First program at II. "Call
to determine your actual trading power. You can
negotiate and do not be afraid to ask for a bonus
week. Also, only request the sleeping capacity that
you actually need to broaden your choices." Ed
recommends that you call your destination resort one
week in advance to confirm your reservation and verify
the exact accommodations. "Always ask for an upgrade
when you check-in. Some resorts hold timeshare weeks
in choice units that are not deposited with the
exchange companies."
If you own a swing week, Ed likes the Flexchange
program at II. Flexchange is designed for owners
traveling on short notice, from 59 days to 24 hours
before check-in. "The best part of this program is that
the normal trade criteria are waived. If you are flexible,
you can go to any resort that is available. The size of
the unit does not matter. I have traded a swing studio
for a Red week in a two bedroom at Marriott in Palm
